Krista Tuohinto
I am a PhD researcher in oncovirology. I have a burning passion for learning that has formed the core of my personality, making me ask how science can explain the natural phenomena around us. Through TSB I aim to share this passion and scientific knowledge to the general audience. I am leading the monthly Afternoon public talk series in Oodi Library and giving public speaking workshops for fellow scientists.
In my PhD I study a virus that can cause cancer in humans, and I aim to translate basic science to accessible treatment for patients. Cancer is not thought to be contagious, however up to 15% of cancers are caused by virus infections, which are particularly distressing in less developed countries and for people with damaged immune systems. Sharing information and communicating with the affected communities is as important as new treatments.
