History of Lutheran Church music is perhaps not the most exciting topic for many people. However, it’s much more than just hymn lyrics and melodies. Congregational singing never happens in a vacuum; it’s always influenced by philosophical and theological thoughts, but political ideas and societal changes have an impact on it as well. Interdisciplinary research on 19th-century Finnish church music thus opens a broad perspective on people’s everyday life in their own localities, and on pan-European flows that also reached the far North two hundred years ago.
