The Youth Science Club (YSC) is teaming up with the Faculty of Medicine and HiLIFE at the University of Helsinki to celebrate “Children’s Day at Work.”
Who are we?
TSB is a vibrant community of early career researchers involved in various SciComm activities such as blogging, podcasts, public speaking and many more ( explore our page www.thesciencebasement.org). The YSC (thesciencebasement.org/youth-science-club/), comprises researchers that share a passion for science communication and popularizing science among young talents – children. We have been actively organizing events for kids primarily from minority and immigrant backgrounds as part of collaboration with Youth Educational Performance Program (YEPP) ry.
Become a Volunteer to the joys of science
Constantly striving to organize activities for the kids and spark their interest in science, we are arranging a campus visit event in partnership with the YEPP ry. We will pair small groups of children with lab guides and volunteers. The guides will take them on a view-only ab tour, explaining their work in simple and approachable ways. Our group of children, aged 9-15 years old.

Please note: we give priority to our TSB community members, as most of us have undergone training and background checks, and are familiar with best practices on working with kids. However, we will be happy to accommodate you as volunteer with other enthusiastic researchers.

Selected researchers will undergo a meeting on rules and the protocol for this event. We work with minors and take this seriously at our club in order to ensure we create a safe and thriving space for them. You will be paired with our TSB members so that you don’t feel overwhelmed or alone. For any questions, feel free to reach out to dollwin.matharu@helsinki.fi.
Rough Schedule 1-1.5h (subject to minor adjustments):
– 3:30 pm: Arrival and snacks with the kids and YEPP representatives
– 3:50 pm: Pairing with the scientists
– 3:50 pm – 4:20 pm: Exploring the labs
– 4:30 pm: Handing over the kids back to our YEPP representatives
This event is part of the Faculty of Medicine and HiLIFE’s broader initiative “Children’s Day at Work”. By participating you will contribute to the growing interests of these talented young children and play your part in scientific outreach to society. Besides snacks, we will present all participating researchers with a certificate for their contributions.
